  15. When you install Windows NT on an IBM ThinkPad 700c or 720c portable
  16. computer and you attempt to convert the boot partition to the NTFS
  17. file system, you may receive the following error message after
  18. rebooting the computer:
  19.  
  20.    FAT structure in area required by NTFS
  21.    Bad Sector in required areas of volume.
  22.  
  23. Before you install Windows NT on an IBM ThinkPad 700c or 720c
  24. portable, an ABIOS patch must be applied. After these files are
  25. applied, you will be unable to convert the file system of the boot
  26. drive to NTFS.
  27.  
  28. This is by design. Windows NT refuses to convert the volume to NTFS
  29. because the existing BIOS Parameter Block (BPB) conflicts with the
  30. disk geometry information returned by the file system driver.
  31.  
  32. Conversion requires these two sources of information about disk
  33. geometry to be consistent because Convert writes a new BPB based on
  34. the information it obtains from the file system driver. If Convert
  35. writes a BPB that conflicts with the BPB expected by the BIOS (that
  36. is, the existing BPB), you will not be able to boot from that disk.
